After building and reviewing websites for 50+ businesses across India, I keep seeing the same mistakes come up again and again.
The scary part? Most business owners do not even realize their website is making these mistakes. And every day these problems go unfixed, the website is silently turning away potential customers.
Here are the top 5 website mistakes I see in Indian businesses — and exactly how to fix each one.
Mistake 1: No Clear Call-to-Action on the Homepage
When a visitor lands on your website, they need to immediately know what to do next. If your homepage does not tell them — they will leave.
This is the most common mistake I see. The homepage has a lot of information, nice images, and text about the company — but no clear, obvious next step for the visitor.
What goes wrong:
- Visitors read your homepage and then leave because nothing prompts them to take action
- Your phone number is buried at the bottom of the page
- There is no contact form, WhatsApp button, or ‘Get a Quote’ button visible
How to fix it:
Add one strong, clear call-to-action button above the fold (the part of your homepage visible without scrolling). Something like ‘Get a Free Quote’, ‘Book a Consultation’, or ‘WhatsApp Us Now’. Make it a button that stands out visually — not just a text link.
Also add your WhatsApp number as a floating button so it is visible on every page.
Mistake 2: Website is Not Mobile-Optimized
Over 70% of internet users in India browse on their smartphones. If your website does not look and work perfectly on mobile — you are losing the majority of your potential customers.
What goes wrong:
- Text is too small to read on a phone
- Buttons are too close together and difficult to tap
- Images are stretched or cut off on mobile screens
- The menu does not work properly on mobile
How to fix it:
Your website needs to be built with responsive design — meaning it automatically adjusts to look great on any screen size. If your current website was built before 2019, there is a strong chance it is not properly mobile-optimized.
Open your website on your own phone right now. If anything looks off — that is money you are losing every day.
Mistake 3: Slow Loading Speed
Google research shows that 53% of mobile users will leave a website if it takes more than 3 seconds to load. In India, where many users are on slower mobile networks, this matters even more.
A slow website also ranks lower on Google — which means fewer people ever find you in the first place.
What goes wrong:
- Large, uncompressed images are the most common culprit
- Too many unnecessary plugins installed on the website
- Cheap, shared hosting that cannot handle even moderate traffic
- No caching set up on the website
How to fix it:
Go to PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) and test your website right now. If your score is below 60 on mobile — you have a serious speed problem.
Fixes include: converting images to WebP format, installing a caching plugin, upgrading hosting, and removing unused plugins and scripts.
Mistake 4: The Website is Invisible on Google
You can have the most beautiful website in the world — but if no one can find it on Google, it is not helping your business.
Many business owners assume that just having a website means people will find them on Google. That is not how it works. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is what makes your website show up when potential customers search for your services.
What goes wrong:
- No target keywords in the page titles and headings
- No meta descriptions written for any page
- No Google Search Console set up to track performance
- No blog or fresh content to signal to Google that the site is active
- The website was never submitted to Google for indexing
How to fix it:
Start with the basics: install an SEO plugin (like RankMath or Yoast), write a focus keyword for each page, fill in meta descriptions, and submit your sitemap to Google Search Console.
Then start publishing one blog post per week targeting questions your potential customers are Googling.
Mistake 5: Outdated Design That Destroys Trust
Your website is often the first impression a potential customer has of your business. If your website looks like it was built in 2014 — that is the impression they get of your entire business.
Design trends change quickly. What looked modern 5 years ago now looks outdated and unprofessional.
What goes wrong:
- Cluttered layouts with too much text and too many elements
- Low-quality stock photos that look generic and fake
- Fonts and colors that do not reflect a modern, professional brand
- No clear visual hierarchy — everything looks equally important
How to fix it:
A website redesign does not have to be expensive or take months. A clean, modern redesign by an experienced developer can be done in 7 to 14 days and make an enormous difference in how potential clients perceive your business.
Ask yourself honestly: if you were a potential customer visiting your website for the first time, would you trust this business enough to contact them?
